Types of Cookies

Cookies are pieces of information placed on the users’ browsers when they visit a website or use a social network with their PC, smartphone or tablet. Each cookie contains different data such as, for example, the name of the server from which it comes, a numeric identifier, etc. Cookies can remain in the system for the duration of a session (i.e. until the browser used for web browsing is closed) or for long periods and may contain a unique identification code.

Technical Cookies
Some cookies are used to perform computer authentication, session tracking and to store specific information about users who log on to a web page. These cookies, so-called technical, are often useful because they can make web browsing easier and faster as, for example, they intervene to facilitate some procedures when online purchases are made; when authentication to restricted areas is carried out, or when a website automatically recognizes the language you use. A particular type of cookies, called analytics, are then used by website operators to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and on how they visit the site itself and then compile general statistics about the service and its use.

Profiling cookies
Other cookies can be used to monitor and profile users while they are browsing, to study their movements and web consultation and consumption habits (what they buy, what they read, etc.), also for the purpose of sending advertising of targeted and personalized services (so-called Behavioral Advertising). We speak in this case of profiling cookies. It may happen that a web page contains cookies from other sites and contained in various elements hosted on the page itself, such as advertising banners, images, videos, etc. These are so-called third-party cookies, which are often used for profiling purposes. Considering the particular invasiveness that profiling cookies (especially those of third parties) may have in the privacy of users, European and Italian legislation provide that users must be adequately informed on the use of the same and express their valid consent to the inclusion of cookies on their computer.
